What have become of Yakov Abramson’s students? Read their stories

Maxim Metlitski was Yakov Abramson’s student. He is currently an Assistant Professor of Physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He obtained his Ph.D. in Physics from Harvard University.
Yakov Abramson taught us math using abstract notions, just as they teach it at the university: matrices, permutations, elements of the theory of groups. But he made it easy, and he enthralled us with every new topic,” remembers Maxim.

“It helped us develop abstract thinking; his lessons were interesting for me. But I was really able to appreciate Yakov Abramson as a teacher when I had to transfer to another school due to several reasons, and their lessons were mostly drilling.” Continue reading >>
Yakov Abramson gave us problems and pretended that we were totally able to solve them, that it was a piece of cake. Lyuba Zakhtarenko, winner of the math competitions:
“My math skills often help me to think ahead: if I do this — that will happen. Would I like this result? No! Therefore I should do something different.”

Danila Gursky, prize-winner of the math Olympiads:
“Yakov Abramson encouraged us to try and solve the problems in any way we could, because if you want something to happen, you need to make at least a small step toward it, to try a little bit. And this is true not only for math!”

Alexandr Belskikh, winner of math competitions: “The way that Yakov Abramson is teaching math really helps develop your brain. Of course, if you are going to be a biologist you probably won’t need to know about rings from algebra, but this knowledge develops your brain and you can use this in every walk of life.”
